Music News: BMI Song of the Year!

So the shortlist has come out detailing the candidates for this years Song of the Year by BMI. The award basically indicates what song was US Radio’s and TV’s most played track, and I have to say, yikes 2015 was a boring year for music. It was the year of the ropy/soppy ballad and when looking down the list, there are only two of three tracks that really jump out to me at all. So let’s take a quick look at the list:

Hello – Adele (Self Written)

One Last Time – Ariana Grande (Written by Giorgio Tuinfort)

Lose My Mind – Brett Eldredge (Written by Gian Piero Reverberi & Gianfranco Reverberi)

Hey Mama – David Guetta feat. Nicki Minaj, Bebe Rexha & Afrojack – (Written by Giorgio Tuinfort & Afrojack)

Photograph – Ed Sheeran (Self Written)

Thinking Out Loud – Ed Sheeran (Self Written)

On My Mind – Ellie Goulding (Self Written)

Uma Thurman – Fall Out Boy (Written by Liam O’Donnell)

Budapest – George Ezra (Self Written)

Lean On – Major Lazer x DJ Snake featuring MØ  (Written by Karen Ørsted)

So judging by all of these names you can see, the British acts dominated 2015 with airtime with Ed Sheeran really nailing the commercial side of things all year round (hold on there is  catch later on). However, the quality of track on that listing is pretty damn poor with George Ezra’s and Major Lazer’s tracks being the only songs of much note from a retrospective point of view. (Here is the catch) It is shocking however that Ed Sheeran is even allowed a vote on this award since he is currently fighting claims of plagiarism for both tracks that are mentioned here; I find it shocking how an artist can win such an award for blatantly ripping off other peoples music. Anyways I’d love to hear what you think in the comment section down below nonetheless.
